LITTLE Nikita Ray has been demonstrating her handiwork by making cards to say thank you to people who have supported her appeal.

With help from parents Malcolm and Trudie Ray, Nikita has been making her mark on the cards with handprints.

The ET joined forces with Nikita's family in January to raise 5,000 for a special wheelchair and other equipment for the two-year-old, who has microcephaly which means her brain develops at a slower rate than usual and she is unable to sit up unaided or put any pressure on her legs.

Donations have been coming in thick and fast, and her family are now trying to trace the person who recently donated 305, bringing the total up to more than 4,880.

Mrs Ray, 39, of Grafton Road, Rushden, said: "We are very grateful to everyone for their support so far and thought it would be a nice gesture for Nikita to put her handprints on the cards.

"We are still looking into buying a specially adapted car seat which swivels around to make it easier for us to get Nikita in and out of the car.

"We are hoping to do it through Nikita's occupational therapist at a discounted rate. Nikita also recently had her six monthly assessment and the specialist said they would like to see Nikita have communication aids soon."

Nikita may be able to operate a specially adapted wheelchair herself from the age of about four, depending on how her motor skills develop.

l Cash or cheques to the appeal can be paid into HSBC Bank, 37 High Street, Rushden, NN10 0QE, or payment can be made to the Nikita Jade Disability Fund, quoting account number 81414682 and sort code 40-39-15.
